Acute dental pain that does not resolve without treatment
Persistent or worsening tooth pain typically indicates infection, decay that has reached the pulp, or a cracked tooth. Over-the-counter pain relief can reduce discomfort temporarily but does not address the underlying cause — and the condition generally worsens without treatment.
If pain is interfering with sleep, eating, or daily function, or has been escalating over 24–48 hours, contact DevelopDent for a priority appointment.
Infection at the root tip or surrounding gum tissue
A dental abscess presents as visible swelling, throbbing pain, and sometimes a bad taste or fever. It will not resolve without professional treatment — antibiotics manage the infection temporarily but do not eliminate the source, which requires clinical intervention.
Contained swelling with localised pain is appropriate for a dental appointment. Spreading swelling toward the jaw, neck, or eye requires immediate hospital care.
Fracture due to trauma, biting force, or a failing restoration
The appropriate treatment depends on how much tooth structure remains and whether the nerve is involved. A small chip may be restored with a composite filling in a single visit; a fracture extending toward the gum line may require a crown or a more involved sequence.
Sharp edges from a broken tooth can lacerate the tongue and cheek — these should be assessed promptly even without significant pain.
Exposed tooth structure requiring prompt review
A lost filling or crown leaves the underlying tooth exposed and sensitive. The tooth structure beneath is often softer than intact enamel, and prolonged exposure increases the risk of further decay or fracture. A lost crown should be assessed within a few days to prevent the tooth from shifting position or sustaining additional damage.
Avulsed permanent tooth — contact the clinic immediately
A completely knocked-out adult tooth has the best chance of being saved within 30–60 minutes of the injury. Contact DevelopDent immediately and come directly to the clinic. If reimplantation is not viable, the treating dentist will discuss long-term replacement options at a follow-up appointment.
Note: knocked-out baby teeth are generally not reimplanted, as doing so risks damaging the developing adult tooth beneath — contact the clinic for guidance on your specific situation.
Acute gum infection or sudden localised swelling
Sudden or significant gum swelling — particularly when localised to one area and accompanied by pain — may indicate an acute periodontal infection. These require clinical assessment to identify the cause and determine whether non-surgical or surgical intervention is appropriate.
Concerns arising after an extraction, root canal, or surgical procedure
Some discomfort and mild swelling in the 24–72 hours following a procedure is expected. Contact DevelopDent if you experience uncontrolled bleeding beyond 30 minutes of consistent pressure, swelling that is worsening after 48 hours, severe pain unresponsive to prescribed medication, or signs of infection such as fever or unusual discharge.
If the procedure was performed at another clinic and you cannot reach your treating dentist, DevelopDent can assess the concern. Bring any documentation of the treatment received. If you are questioning whether the original treatment recommendation was appropriate, a structured second opinion consultation may be the right next step.
Less common situations that still warrant prompt assessment
DevelopDent can also assess the following during clinic hours. Each links to the relevant treatment page for further information on how the condition is typically managed:
Cracked tooth — sharp pain when biting and releasing, particularly on cold, often indicates a fracture extending toward the root. Early detection is critical; deep cracks are difficult to treat once they propagate.
Dry socket — developing 2–4 days after an extraction as a dull, intensifying ache radiating to the ear and jaw. The socket appears empty rather than filled with a dark clot. Requires dressing by the treating dentist.
Wisdom tooth pain — acute pain or swelling at the back of the jaw associated with a partially erupted or impacted wisdom tooth.
Jaw pain or TMJ flare — sudden jaw pain, clicking, or limited opening, particularly following trauma. For ongoing or chronic jaw concerns, a dedicated TMJ evaluation is recommended rather than an emergency appointment.
Do I need to be an existing patient to be seen for an emergency?
No. DevelopDent accepts new patients for urgent dental concerns. Contacting the clinic in advance by phone or WhatsApp helps ensure the appointment is appropriately scheduled and any relevant records can be requested if needed.
Is DevelopDent open on weekends?
DevelopDent is open Monday to Saturday, 10:00 am to 7:00 pm. Sunday appointments are available on request. For urgent concerns outside clinic hours, leave a message via WhatsApp — the clinic will respond at the earliest opportunity when the doctor is available.
Will the emergency be resolved in the same appointment?
The goal is to address the acute concern — pain relief, temporary restoration, drainage, or stabilisation — at the first visit. Some cases require a follow-up appointment once swelling has resolved or materials need to be fabricated. This will be explained clearly before any work begins.
Can I come in for a concern after treatment at another clinic?
Yes. If you are experiencing post-procedure complications from treatment elsewhere and cannot reach your treating dentist, DevelopDent can assess the concern. Bring any documentation of the treatment performed. For a considered review of a treatment recommendation rather than an acute emergency, a second opinion consultation may be the more appropriate appointment type.
