TMJ & Functional Bite Treatment

Jaw pain, clicking, clenching, and worn teeth are rarely about one tooth — they are about how the upper and lower jaws interact, under load, over time. DevelopDent approaches TMJ and bite concerns conservatively, with structural and functional assessment grounded in craniodontics training.

Overview

What TMJ care looks like at DevelopDent

The temporomandibular joints — the two small joints just in front of each ear — let the lower jaw open, close, and slide. When the way the teeth meet, the muscles that move the jaw, and the joints themselves stop working together, the symptoms range from clicking and stiffness to chronic headaches, worn or chipped teeth, and difficulty chewing.

The treating dentist holds advanced training in craniodontics and TMJ-focused planning. The clinic approaches these cases conservatively — diagnosis first, reversible interventions before irreversible ones, and an honest call on when a referral to a specialist (oral surgeon, physiotherapist, or pain specialist) is the right next step.

TMJ assessment is also embedded into comprehensive dental care here — particularly when planning orthodontic treatment, full-mouth restorations, or extensive cosmetic work.

Common Symptoms

When TMJ assessment is the right next step

Many patients live with these symptoms for years without connecting them to the bite. A structured assessment is worthwhile when any of the following persist:

Clicking, popping, or grating in the jaw joint
Jaw stiffness, locking, or restricted opening
Tenderness in the jaw or temple muscles
Frequent tension headaches, especially on waking
Worn, flattened, or chipped tooth surfaces
Clenching or grinding (bruxism), awake or asleep
Sensitive or fractured teeth without an obvious cause
An uneven bite or one that feels "off"
When immediate escalation is needed Sudden, severe, or persistent jaw pain — especially with locking — warrants prompt assessment. If the symptom is acute and severe, contact the clinic by phone or message before booking online.
The Process

How an assessment is structured

TMJ assessment is a multi-system examination — bite, muscles, and joints all considered together. The first appointment is diagnostic; treatment is discussed once the picture is clear.

1

History and Symptom Mapping

When the symptoms began, how they have changed, what triggers them, what eases them. Habits like nail-biting, gum chewing, posture, and sleep patterns all enter the picture.

2

Clinical and Muscle Examination

Range of motion, joint sounds, tenderness mapping across the masseter, temporalis, and lateral pterygoid muscles. Findings are recorded against a baseline so progress can be measured objectively.

3

Bite and Occlusal Analysis

Using 3D intraoral scanning and articulating papers, the treating dentist evaluates how the teeth meet, where forces are concentrated, and where wear patterns are appearing.

4

Discussion and Conservative Plan

Where appropriate, the first interventions are reversible: occlusal splints (night guards), bite refinement, muscle therapy, behavioural changes, and a monitoring schedule. Irreversible work — restorations, orthodontic correction, or surgical referral — is discussed only once conservative options have been weighed.

5

Integrated Follow-Through

If a TMJ finding affects a larger plan — for example, an orthodontic or full-mouth case — the bite consideration is built into that plan from the start, rather than discovered mid-treatment.

Why DevelopDent

Why TMJ care belongs in the planning, not after it

Trained in craniodontics and TMJ-focused planning
The treating dentist's continuing education in craniodontics and TMJ — see her clinical background — informs how cases are assessed and how bite considerations are weighed against restorative and orthodontic decisions.
Conservative-first treatment philosophy
Reversible interventions — splints, behavioural changes, occlusal adjustment — are tried and evaluated before any irreversible step is considered. Restorations and crowns are not the first answer to a TMJ symptom.
Honest scope of practice
DevelopDent treats TMJ presentations within a general-dental scope. When a case calls for a maxillofacial specialist, a physiotherapist, or a chronic pain specialist, the referral is made clearly — not held onto.
Bite as a first-class part of every plan
For patients undergoing orthodontic treatment, crown work, or implant restorations, the TMJ and bite assessment is part of the diagnosis — not bolted on if a problem appears later.
Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about TMJ treatment

Is TMJ pain always permanent?
No. Many TMJ presentations respond well to conservative care — splints, posture and habit change, muscle therapy, and bite refinement. Some cases are chronic and require ongoing management; others resolve fully. The honest answer depends on the specific findings.
Will I be fitted for a night guard right away?
Not always. A night guard is one tool in TMJ care, but the right type of splint and whether one is appropriate depends on the bite analysis and the muscle examination. The treating dentist will explain what type of appliance, if any, fits your case.
Can orthodontic treatment fix TMJ?
Sometimes — when the bite relationship is part of the problem. Other times, orthodontic treatment is the wrong answer and treating the bite alone, or addressing muscle and habit factors, is more appropriate. The diagnostic phase determines which.
Do you do TMJ surgery?
No. Surgical TMJ care is the domain of maxillofacial surgeons. DevelopDent's role is conservative TMJ care and clear referral when a case escalates beyond that scope.
Will I need imaging beyond a 3D scan?
It depends. Targeted intraoral radiographs may be taken if a specific tooth-level concern is suspected. For joint imaging beyond clinical examination — when warranted — referral to a centre with appropriate imaging is arranged.
How long until I notice improvement?
Many patients with muscle-dominant TMJ symptoms notice meaningful improvement within 4 to 8 weeks of consistent splint wear and behavioural change. Joint-dominant or long-standing cases can take longer. The treating dentist will set a review schedule so progress is monitored, not assumed.

Map the symptoms before treating them

A TMJ assessment at DevelopDent is built around understanding what is happening, why, and what the lowest-risk first step looks like. Treatment follows the diagnosis — not the other way around.
