Gum Contouring & Depigmentation

Reshaping uneven gum lines and reducing dark gum pigmentation, performed only after periodontal health is confirmed. Soft tissue work at DevelopDent is conservative, periodontally led, and planned alongside the teeth — not in isolation from them.

Overview

Two procedures, one shared principle

Gum contouring (also called gingivectomy or gingival sculpting) reshapes the gum line around one or more teeth — making it more even, less of a "gummy smile", or better proportioned to the underlying tooth. Gum depigmentation reduces or removes darker pigment in the gum tissue, often genetic in origin, that some patients prefer to lighten.

Both procedures share the same DevelopDent principle: soft tissue work is not started until periodontal health — the bone and gum supporting the teeth — has been confirmed. Cosmetic gum changes are surgical changes, however minor; doing them on inflamed or recessing gums tends to make the underlying problem worse, not better.

Gum contouring is sometimes done as part of a larger cosmetic plan alongside veneers or whitening — the teeth and the gum line shaping one another. For deeper periodontal concerns or surgical pocket reduction, see periodontal surgery — a separate procedure with a different goal.

When It Helps

Who is a candidate for soft tissue refinement?

Patients typically come for gum contouring or depigmentation for one of these reasons:

An uneven gum line across the front teeth
A "gummy smile" — gum showing prominently above the teeth
Short-looking teeth caused by excess gum tissue
Dark or patchy gum pigmentation
Asymmetric gum levels alongside planned veneer work
Gum line refinement after orthodontic treatment
When contouring is not the right answer If gum recession (gum line moving downward exposing more root) is present, the answer is not contouring — that would make recession worse. If active gum disease is present, the answer is deep cleaning or periodontal therapy first. The treating dentist will clarify which category your case sits in before any soft tissue work is offered.
The Process

What the appointment looks like

1

Periodontal Assessment

Before any soft tissue work, the gums and supporting bone are examined. Active inflammation, recession, or untreated periodontal disease change the plan entirely — and those findings come first.

2

Design and Marking

For contouring: the treating dentist marks the new gum line tooth by tooth, balancing the teeth on either side. You see the proposed change before any soft tissue is touched. For depigmentation: the area to be treated is mapped.

3

Local Anaesthesia and Treatment

Local anaesthesia is applied. Gum contouring uses precision instruments to reshape the soft tissue; depigmentation typically uses a controlled method to ablate or peel the pigmented epithelium, allowing healthier tissue to grow back lighter. Most cases are completed in a single visit.

4

Post-Procedure Care

Soft food for a day or two, gentle oral hygiene around the treated area, and an analgesic if needed. The treating dentist will give written aftercare instructions before you leave.

5

Healing and Review

Soft tissue typically heals within 1 to 2 weeks. A review appointment confirms healing and, where the procedure is part of a larger plan (such as veneer work), establishes the timing for the next stage.

Why DevelopDent

Soft tissue work, periodontally first

Periodontal status confirmed first
No cosmetic gum work begins until the periodontal health — bone level, attached gum, inflammation status — has been documented. This protects the long-term result from being undone by an underlying problem that was never addressed.
Conservative reshaping
The smallest change that achieves the goal is the default. Over-aggressive contouring exposes more root surface than intended and is not reversible. DevelopDent errs toward staged, measurable changes.
Integrated with the larger plan
Where contouring sits alongside veneers or whitening, the soft tissue work is sequenced so each stage builds on the previous. The gum line that frames a new veneer is part of the veneer plan, not an afterthought.
Honest scope on depigmentation
Some gum pigment recurs over years, particularly with strong genetic patterns. DevelopDent will discuss expected longevity, the possibility of partial recurrence, and what a refresh would involve — so the decision to proceed is informed.
Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about gum contouring

Is the procedure painful?
Local anaesthesia is used throughout, so the procedure itself is not painful. Mild soreness for a day or two afterward is normal and typically managed with over-the-counter analgesics. Most patients describe the experience as easier than they expected.
How long does healing take?
Soft tissue heals quickly — initial closure within a few days, full surface healing within 1 to 2 weeks. If contouring is part of a veneer plan, final veneer placement is usually scheduled at least 2 to 4 weeks after gum work to let the tissue stabilise.
Will my gums grow back?
The contoured gum line is generally stable in healthy patients with good oral hygiene. Some minor rebound is possible in the weeks after; the review appointment monitors for this. Active periodontal disease, smoking, or poor hygiene can compromise the result, which is why those factors are addressed first.
Does gum depigmentation last forever?
Often years, but not always permanent. The pigment-producing cells can repopulate, particularly in patients with strong genetic pigmentation. Recurrence, where it happens, tends to be partial and slow. A refresh treatment is possible if needed.
Can I have contouring done at the same visit as veneers?
Typically the contouring is done first, then a healing window of 2 to 4 weeks lets the gum margin settle before veneers are designed and placed. Working on freshly trimmed tissue can lead to inaccurate veneer margins as the gum continues to remodel.
Will my speech be affected during healing?
No — the changes are surface-level and do not affect the way the lips, tongue, or teeth interact. Some tenderness in the first 24 to 48 hours may feel unusual but does not impair speech.

Plan soft tissue work on a healthy foundation

A gum contouring or depigmentation consultation at DevelopDent reviews periodontal health, the proposed change, and how the soft tissue plan fits with anything else you are considering — so the result lasts and the foundation underneath is sound.
